Grant Writing Assistance through Grant Writing Course

Nonprofit organizations can receive free writing services for full-grant proposals prepared by graduate students enrolled in PA 640, NCSU’s grant-writing course.

Proposals will be developed over a short period of time. Your nonprofit would need to have an identified project for which you are already planning to seek grant funds. We would also need you to assign a contact person to the student, so that he/she can obtain information needed to develop the proposal.

Students are learning the mechanics of grant writing through this course taught by Ruth Peebles, an adjunct instructor in NCSU’s Public Administration Department. Ms. Peebles is president of the INS Group, which provides grant writing and other services to nonprofits, government agencies and faith-based institutions.

If you are interested in receiving grant writing assistance, provide Ms. Peebles (rpeebles@theinsgroup.com) with the following information:

  • Organization name
  • Name, phone and e-mail address of contact person
  • Name of project for which you are seeking funds
  • Brief description of the project (3-4 lines).

A representative from your nonprofit (executive director, development officer or program director) will be required to meet with the student (in person preferrered, but by phone is acceptable).
The purpose of the meeting is to:

  • Introduce your organization and provide background information.
  • Share information about the projects or programs you want funded.
  • Identify potential grant opportunities or a potential grant opportunity. If you have not identified a grant opportunity, the student will conduct research and find potential sources.
  • Provide any supporting documents necessary to write a proposal.

Please note: Students can write a core proposal that can be used for future submissions, or complete a grant application to submit to a specific source. To fulfill course requirements, any funding source identified must have a comprehensive application process that requires a narrative that includes all or most of components described below. Comprehensive online applications are acceptable. Please be willing to respond in a timely manner to students’ requests for additional information over a seven-week period, and be available via e-mail or phone.

Expectations of Students

Students will be responsible for writing a proposal that includes a cover letter, executive summary, and a proposal narrative. The proposal narrative will include the following components: an introduction, need statement, goals and objectives, methodology, evaluation, and budget and future funding.

Each student will have six weeks to complete and submit a final proposal.
