Exploring Communication Practices of Nonprofit Boards of Directors:
Impacts on Organizational Identification, Commitment, and Collaborative
Decision-Making
Nonprofit boards create challenging communication spaces because members come from different organizations, represent diverse professional roles, and meet for relatively short time periods. Dr. Jessica Jameson, Interim Associate Department Head and Associate Professor of Communication and her co-investigator, Stan Holt, PhD student in Public Administration, are observing board meetings, interviewing board members, and analyzing historical and current correspondence such as meeting minutes and emails to explore the central question: How do features of board member communication such as channels used, timing and amount of communication, content of communication, and perceptions of communication practices, impact board member identification with the organization, board member commitment, group cohesiveness, and collaborative decision-making? Through this study Dr. Jameson hopes to (1) Assist in development of a model for improved nonprofit board of directors communication and (2) Provide the foundation for development of necessary training for nonprofit board members. This research is being funded in part by a 2007-08 CHASS Scholarly Project Award.
